Arriving

In the heart of Cagliari, on one of its most famous shopping streets, is the entry to Dimora LAJ — and the hustle and bustle stops right behind the front door of the building.

The Stairs & Love and Joy

Arrival

Entering the building on the ground floor, you are met by an impressive marble staircase descending. Above it, the family crest the house takes its name from: Love and Joy. A wrought-iron banister and hand-painted walls never fail to impress.

Under the Vault

The apartment runs the length of the floor beneath one continuous barrel vault, with the planted patio opening off it.

The Long Room

Lounge

Descending the marble stairs, the Long Room unfolds, with vaulted ceilings from centuries ago — this is a historic place, that much is clear. Artists’ canvases, access to the patio, roomy couches and murals are everywhere. Exquisitely furnished and decorated, it offers relaxation and comfort.

The Sitting Room

Lounge

Opening onto the patio, the Sitting Room is a comfortable place to retreat and snooze.

The Old Bridal Shop

The kitchen stands in what used to be a bridal shop. The fitting rooms where brides once tried their dresses are still there — they hold the appliances now.

The Kitchen

Kitchen

Carrara marble, an induction hob, and an island with stools for breakfast. The old fitting rooms behind it house the appliances and the rest of what a kitchen needs.

The Dining Room

Dining

Eucalyptus green walls, arched double doorways and antiques — everyone feels at home here for dinner with family or friends.

The Television Corner

Sitting

A low cabinet with the television faces a deep mustard-yellow couch, set between the marble island and the tall glazed doors. It catches the last of the afternoon light through the curtains, and it is where the evening usually ends — within reach of the kitchen, and of the garden beyond the glass.

On the Roof

Up one more flight, the whole thing opens out.

The Roof Terrace

Terrace

Stairs from the patio take you up to the roof terrace: a pergola, plenty of space and a seating area. Gaze over the harbour of Cagliari and the sea beyond.

Where You Sleep

Two bedrooms at either end of the floor, each one painted by hand.

The Blue Room

Bedroom

Marvellously renovated and painted by an artist into a masterpiece. Tall glass doors divide the room from the kitchen and the television area.

The White Room

Bedroom

Beautifully decorated, with its own terrace and a great deal of light — helped by the materials and by the arched construction.

The Bathrooms

Three, and not one of them plain.

The Blue Bathroom

Bathroom

Serving the Blue Room: high ceilings, glazed walls painted with grasses and gold, and brass fittings that belong here. Shower, lavatory, bidet and basin — you will want to take this bathroom home with you.

The Shell Bathroom

Bathroom

Serving the White Room, and finished by a renowned artist from Milan.

The Painted Passage

Circulation

Further testament to the artistry applied to this apartment. The dishwasher lives here, and the walls are worth a long look.
